What Are My Deadlines and Credit Requirements?
If you’re practicing law in NY, you need to complete 24 CLE credits every 2 years.
- At least 4 hours of Ethics
- At least 1 hour of Diversity, Inclusion and Elimination of Bias
- At least 1 hour of Cybersecurity, Privacy and Data Protection
You must complete your CLE requirement within 30 days after your birthday on alternate years.
- If you were admitted before January 1, 1982 or in an even-numbered year (e.g., 1998), then you will register in even-numbered years.
- If you were admitted in an odd-numbered year after 1982, then you will register in odd-numbered years.
What Types of CLE Courses Are Accepted in New York?
All 24 credits can be from Live Webcasts or On-Demand courses.

How do I report my CLE credits?
Attorneys certify completion of their CLE requirement at as part of their biennial attorney registration by logging into their Attorney Online Services Account with the New York State Unified Court System. Certificates of completion must be kept for 4 years but need not be submitted other than upon request.
Can I carry over extra CLE credits?
6 credits may be carried over to the next reporting period.
What are the consequences of not completing my CLE in time?
The New York State CLE Board CLE Rules govern CLE in New York. The names of attorneys who are noncompliant with the state’s CLE requirements will be sent to the appellate division, which will determine the action to be taken.
What if I’m New to Practicing in New York?
Newly admitted attorneys must complete 16 transitional CLE credits in each of the first 2 years of Bar admission.
- 3 credits in Ethics and Professionalism
- 6 credits in Skills
- 7 credits in Professional Practice, Law Practice Management or Cybersecurity, Privacy and Data Protection – General or Cybersecurity, Privacy and Data Protection – Ethics (of which at least 1 must be in Cybersecurity, Privacy and Data Protection)
8 credits can be carried over from year 1 to year 2. 6 credits can be carried over from year 2 into the next reporting period. Ethics & Professionalism and Cybersecurity, Privacy and Data Protection – Ethics cannot be carried forward.
