December 2024 Colorado CLE Deadline: What Attorneys Need to Know

As an attorney practicing in Colorado, December 31st marks a crucial date on your calendar. With the Colorado Continuing Legal Education deadline just around the corner, it’s time to ensure you’ve completed all the necessary credits to maintain your license and stay in good standing with the Colorado Bar Association.

What Are My Deadlines and Credit Requirements?

If you’re practicing law in CO, you need to complete 45 CLE credits every 3 years. Your first compliance period begins on the date of admission or certification to the Colorado Bar and ends on December 31 of the third full calendar year following the year of admission or certification to practice law in Colorado.

At least 5 of those credits must be in Ethics or Professionalism, and at least 2 of those credits must be in Equity, Diversity and Inclusivity.

You have until December 31st to complete your CLEs, and until January 31st to report to the Colorado Bar Association.

What Types of CLE Courses Are Accepted in Colorado?

All 45 credits may be On-Demand or Live Webcasts.

How do I report my CLE credits?
Attorneys certify and submit notice of attendance by logging into their member portal on the Colorado Supreme Court website.

Can I carry over extra CLE credits?
No credits may be carried over to the next reporting period.

What are the consequences of not completing my CLE in time?

If you fail to comply with your CLE requirements, you must follow the instructions listed here to come back into compliance under the Continuing Legal and Judicial Education (CLJE) Rules and Regulations.

What if I’m New to Practicing in Colorado?

Newly admitted attorneys are subject to the same CLE requirements as all other attorneys in Colorado.

The Practicing Professionalism course taken by attorneys prior to admission satisfies 7 General Credit Hours for attorneys admitted by the bar exam.  Attorney’s admitted by motion or UBE Score Transfer will receive 7 General credits including 5 Professional Responsibility credits.
