December 2024 WI CLE Deadline: What Attorneys Need to Know

As an attorney practicing in Wisconsin, December 31st marks a crucial date on your calendar. With the Wisconsin Continuing Legal Education deadline just around the corner, it’s time to ensure you’ve completed all the necessary credits to maintain your license and stay in good standing with the Wisconsin Court System.

What Are My Deadlines and Credit Requirements?

If you’re practicing law in WI, you need to complete 30 CLE credits every 2 years. At least 3 of those credits must be in Ethics (must be Live Webcast).

You have until December 31st to complete your CLEs, and until February 1st to report them.

What Types of CLE Courses Are Accepted in Wisconsin?

All 24 credits can be from Live Webcasts, 12 can be from On-Demand courses.

Can I carry over extra CLE credits?
15 credits may be carried into the next reporting period, excluding Ethics.

What are the consequences of not completing my CLE in time?
If the attorney does not complete the CLE requirements or get an exemption, the state supreme court may deem the attorney ineligible to practice law.

What if I’m New to Practicing in Wisconsin?

Newly admitted attorneys are exempt from the CLE requirement within their first year of admission.
