New York CLE Requirements for Attorneys

New York MCLE Requirements Overview

Credit Requirements

  • Total Credits: 24 credit hours every 2 years
    • At least 4 hours of Ethics
    • At least 1 hour of Diversity, Inclusion and Elimination of Bias
    • At least 1 hour of Cybersecurity, Privacy and Data Protection

  • Credit Format: All 24 credits can be from Live Webcasts or On-Demand courses

  • All Courses on SproutEd are approved for credit in New York

Compliance & Reporting

  • CLE Deadline: 30 days after the attorney’s birthday

  • Compliance and Reporting Procedure:  Attorneys certify completion of their CLE requirement at as part of their biennial attorney registration by logging into their Attorney Online Services Account with the New York State Unified Court System
       
  • Certificate Maintenance: Certificates of completion must be kept for 4 years but need not be submitted other than upon request. 

Additional Info

  • Carryover Credit: 6 credits may be carried over to the next reporting period

  • All 24 credit hours may be completed online

  • All courses on SproutEd are approved for credit in New York

New York CLE Requirements FAQs

Attorneys admitted in New York for two years or less.

Total Credits: 16 transitional CLE credits in each of the first 2 years of Bar admission.

  • 3 credits in Ethics and Professionalism
  • 6 credits in Skills
  • 7 credits in Professional Practice, Law Practice Management or Cybersecurity, Privacy and Data Protection – General or Cybersecurity, Privacy and Data Protection – Ethics (of which at least 1 must be in Cybersecurity, Privacy and Data Protection)


8 credits can be carried over from year 1 to year 2.  6 credits can be carried over from year 2 into the next reporting period.  Ethics & Professionalism and Cybersecurity, Privacy and Data Protection – Ethics cannot be carried forward.

Attorneys can complete 24 credits on SproutEd. All of SproutEd’s courses are approved for credit in New York.
