Navigating the 2025 CLE Requirements for Maine Attorneys
As a practicing attorney in Maine, December 31st is an important deadline for ensuring that you meet all Continuing Legal Education (CLE) requirements. The Maine CLE deadline is approaching, and it’s essential to confirm that you’ve completed all the necessary credits to keep your license current and in good standing with the Maine Board of Overseers of the Bar.

What Are My Deadlines and Credit Requirements?
If you’re practicing law in ME, you need to complete 12 CLE credits per calendar year. At least 1 of those credits must be in Ethics. At least 1 of those credits must be in Harassment and Discrimination.
You have until December 31st to complete your CLEs, and until the last business day in February to report them (SproutEd handles the reporting for you).
What Types of CLE Courses Are Accepted in Maine?
1 credit in Harassment and Discrimination must be taken as a Live In-Person course. 11 credit hours may be taken as Live Webinar courses. Up to 5 credits may be taken as On-Demand courses, but not the Ethics credit.

ME CLE FAQs
How do I report my CLE credits?
SproutEd Reports your attendance and credit the Maine Board of Overseers of the Bar.
Each year, attorneys shall certify the accuracy of their individual MCLE Annual Report Statement to the CLE Committee no later than the close of business on the last day of February.
Can I carry over extra CLE credits?
10 credits may be carried over to the next reporting period, excluding Ethics and Harassment and Discrimination.
What are the consequences of not completing my CLE in time?
The CLE committee will assess a noncompliance fee to attorneys who do not have the required CLE credits on the last business day of February. Attorneys who do not meet the MCLE requirements may have their right to practice law suspended. Attorneys who have been suspended may seek reinstatement.
What if I’m New to Practicing in Maine?
Newly admitted attorneys are subject to the same CLE requirement as all attorneys in Maine.
