2025 CLE Requirements for New Jersey Lawyers You Need to Know

If you’re a practicing attorney in New Jersey, December 31st is a key date you won’t want to miss. The deadline for fulfilling your Continuing Legal Education (CLE) requirements is fast approaching. Ensuring you’ve completed the required number of credits will help you maintain your license and stay compliant with the Supreme Court Board on Continuing Legal Education.

What Are My Deadlines and Credit Requirements?

If you’re practicing law in NJ, you need to complete 24 CLE credits every 2 years. At least 2 of those credits must be in Ethics, of which at least 2 must be in Diversity, Inclusion, and Elimination of Bias.

You have until December 31st to complete your CLEs.

How to determine your reporting year:

  • Odd-numbered years – Attorneys with birthdays January 1st – June 30th 
  • Even-numbered years – Attorneys with birthdays July 1st – December 31st 

What Types of CLE Courses Are Accepted in New Jersey?

All 24 credits can be Live Webcast courses, 12 credits may be On Demand courses.

How do I report my CLE credits?
Attorneys report compliance on their Annual Attorney Registration and Billing in the year following their CLE deadline.

Can I carry over extra CLE credits?
12 General credits may be carried over into the next reporting period.

What are the consequences of not completing my CLE in time?
You will be placed on the CLE ineligible list and as such are no longer authorized to practice New Jersey law until you comply with the CLE requirement.

What if I’m New to Practicing in New Jersey?

Total Credits: 24 credit hours in the first 2-year compliance period:

  • At least 5 hours in Ethics or Professionalism, of which at least 2 must be in Diversity, Inclusion, and Elimination of Bias

  • 16 Credits in at least 6 of the following areas:
    • New Jersey Administrative Law
    • New Jersey Basic Estate Planning
    • New Jersey Civil or Criminal Trial Preparation
    • New Jersey Real Estate Closing Procedures
    • New Jersey Attorney Trust and Business Accounting Fundamentals (1 credit required)
    • New Jersey Landlord/Tenant Practice
    • New Jersey Municipal Court Practice
    • New Jersey Labor and Employment Law
    • New Jersey Law Office Management
    • New Jersey Workers’ Compensation Law
