Virginia CLE Requirements for Attorneys

Virginia MCLE Requirements Overview

Credit Requirements

  • Total Credits: 12 credit hours per year
    • At least 2 credits in Ethics
    • At least 4 credits Live

  • Credit Format: All 12 credits can be from Live Webcasts (which are considered Live), 8 credits can be from On Demand courses, all of which can be taken on SproutEd

  • All Courses on SproutEd are approved for credit in Virginia

Compliance & Reporting

  • CLE Deadline: October 31st

  • Reporting Deadline: December 15th

  • Reporting and Compliance Procedure: By December 15th at 4:45 PM EST, attorneys must certify compliance on their Virginia State Bar Member Portal using course ID numbers provided on their certificates of completion.

Additional Info

  • Carryover Credit: 12 credits may be carried into the next reporting period, including 2 in Ethics

  • All courses on SproutEd are approved for credit in Virginia

  • All courses can be taken online with SproutEd

Virginia CLE Requirements FAQs

Attorneys are newly admitted during the compliance period in which they are admitted.

Newly admitted attorneys are exempt from a CLE requirement during the compliance period in which they are admitted.

Newly admitted attorneys must complete the Harry L. Carrico Professionalism Corse provided by the Virginia Bar within 24 months of becoming an active member. The course may count toward an attorneys CLE requirements in their first compliance period.

Attorneys can complete all 12 credits online with SproutEd. All of SproutEd’s courses are approved for credit in Virginia. SproutEd’s Live Webcasts are considered Live Programming.
