For attorneys practicing in Vermont, June 30th is a significant deadline to keep in mind. As the Vermont Continuing Legal Education deadline approaches, it’s essential to ensure you’ve fulfilled all required credits to keep your license active and in good standing with the Mandatory Continuing Legal Education Board Office of Attorney Licensing.

What Are My Deadlines and Credit Requirements?

If you’re practicing law in VT, you need to complete 24 credit hours every 2 years. 

  • At least 2 credits in Ethics
  • At least 1 credit in Diversity and Inclusion
  • At least 1 credit in Attorney Wellness
  • At least 12 credits by Moderated Programming or Non-Moderated Programming with Interactivity as a Key Component

You have until June 30th to complete your CLEs, and until July 1st to report them.

What Types of CLE Courses Are Accepted in Vermont?

All 24 credits can be from Live Webcasts or On-Demand courses.

How do I report my CLE credits?
Attorneys must certify their compliance on the CLE Compliance Form emailed to each attorney.

Can I carry over extra CLE credits?
Credits may be carried over from the second year of an attorney’s reporting period.

What are the consequences of not completing my CLE in time?

You must complete the Makeup Plan and submit a Certification of Completion of the Makeup Plan by November 15 of the year you renew your license.  If you do not timely submit a Certification of Completion, you will be subject to administrative suspension of your license to practice law.

What are the requirements for newly admitted attorneys in Vermont?

Total Credits: 24 credit hours every two years:

  • At least 2 credits in Ethics

  • At least 12 credits by Moderated Programming or Non-Moderated Programming with Interactivity as a Key Component

In addition, within one year of admission, newly admitted attorneys must complete: 15 CLE Credits on Vermont Practice in courses approved by the Board of Continuing Legal Education and certified by the Board of Bar Examiners.  At least 6 of these credits must be from Moderated Programming or Non-Moderated Programming with Interactivity as a Key Component.
