New Members: Free 1 credit course with code FREECLE

Are any attorneys exempt from CLE in Alaska?

Yes. In Alaska, attorneys are exempt from CLE if they are inactive, retired, or newly admitted during the year of admission. Active members must complete 12 credits annually, but these exemptions relieve certain groups of the requirement.

For example, inactive and retired members do not need to report MCLE, and new admittees are excused for their first year. Extensions may also be requested under Bar Rule 65(d).

  • Inactive & Retired Members – Exempt from mandatory CLE requirements.
  • New Admittees – Exempt for the remainder of the admission year, with reporting beginning the following year.
  • Extensions – Requests may be made under Bar Rule 65(d).

Key Takeaway: Only active members must comply with Alaska’s MCLE rules, while inactive, retired, and new admittees in their admission year are exempt.
