Can technology CLE count toward regular CLE credits?

Yes — many jurisdictions allow technology-oriented CLE courses to count toward regular CLE credit, often under a specific “technology” or “competence/skills” category.
Whether such credit is allowed — and how much counts toward the general requirement — depends on your state’s CLE rules and category scheme.

Details:

  • In California, lawyers must complete at least one credit hour of education addressing technology in the practice of law as part of the MCLE requirement.
  • In New York, attorneys must complete 1 credit hour in cybersecurity, privacy and data protection (which is a technology-related category) in each reporting cycle.
  • In Florida, at least three of the 30 CLE hours in each cycle must be in approved technology programs.
  • The technological or cybersecurity credit may also be used toward ethics or general credits depending on the state’s categorization rules (for example, New York allows part of the cybersecurity credit to satisfy the ethics requirement if classified as “Cybersecurity Ethics”).

Key Takeaway:
You can often count technology or cyber-related CLE toward your regular CLE, but only in a jurisdiction that permits it — always check your state’s rules on technology or cybersecurity categories and how they integrate with general or ethics credits.
