What counts toward CLE requirements in Maine?

In Maine, CLE credit counts through accredited live, self-study, teaching, writing, auditing, and certain volunteer roles, subject to the limits and specialty requirements set in Bar Rule 5.

Each attorney must complete 12 MCLE credit hours per calendar year, including at least one live ethics hour and one in-person harassment/discrimination hour.

Approved activities that count

  • Live programs (in-person or live webcast) approved by the CLE Committee under Rule 5 — credit is based on actual participation (60 minutes = 1 credit).
  • Self-study / technological / on-demand formats (recorded programs), limited to no more than five credit hours per year.
  • Teaching or presenting in approved CLE programs (with or without substantial written materials) — special rules on credit multipliers apply.
  • Teaching or assisting in law school courses (ABA-approved), either for academic credit or audit — credit conversion rules apply (e.g. 6 credits per academic hour, or 4 credits for audit under requirements).
  • Writing legal articles, books, or periodical pieces (upon written request and subject to approval) in ethics, professionalism, law practice, or substantive legal topics.
  • Volunteer service (e.g. serving on boards, committees, or commissions) that is primarily concerned with ethics or professional responsibility, subject to caps.
  • Auditing law courses at accredited law schools (with minimum attendance) under specified conditions.

Limits, requirements, and carryover

  • Specialty hours: at least one live hour of ethics and professionalism, and one in-person hour of harassment/discrimination (though in-person requirement may be waived under limited circumstances).
  • Self-study limit: no more than five credit hours per year from self-study formats.
  • Carryover: attorneys may carry forward up to 10 credit hours to the next year, but no more than 5 of those may be self-study credits.
  • Credit must be earned by December 31st, and attorneys must certify compliance by the last business day of February.
  • Credits exclude time for non-substantive portions (breaks, administrative announcements).
  • The CLE Committee may require program sponsors to monitor and certify attendance.
  • For teaching credit: if the presenter prepares substantial written materials, the multiplier is two credit hours per 30 minutes; without substantial materials, one credit per 30 minutes.

Key Takeaway: In Maine, attorneys earn CLE through approved live or self-study programs, teaching, writing, law-school activities, and qualifying volunteer roles, but must meet specialty live/ethics requirements, abide by self-study caps, and properly report credits under Bar Rule 5.
