New Members: Free 1 credit course with code FREECLE

What counts toward CLE requirements in Massachusetts?

There is no mandatory CLE requirement in Massachusetts, so no activities “count” toward continuing education for license compliance.

However, newly admitted attorneys must complete an in-person “Practicing with Professionalism” course within 18 months of admission.

Voluntary continuing education

  • Because CLE is not mandatory in Massachusetts, there is no formal accreditation process, reporting requirement, or approved credit list.
  • Massachusetts attorneys may voluntarily attend or complete CLE programs (live, webinars, self-study, etc.) for professional development, but those do not have legal credit value under state rules.
  • The only mandatory education tied to admission is the professionalism course, which must be held live.

Key Takeaway: Because Massachusetts has no mandatory CLE regime, nothing officially “counts” toward CLE—attorneys may engage in continuing education voluntarily, but only the required professionalism course has legal effect.
