What counts toward CLE requirements in Ohio?

In Ohio, CLE credit counts when the activity is approved by the Supreme Court’s Commission on CLE and meets standards in Gov. Bar R. X (or Gov. Jud. R. IV for judges).

Attorneys must complete 24 credit hours every two years, including 2.5 hours in “professional conduct.”

Qualifying CLE activities

  • Attendance at approved live or interactive programs (in-person, webinars, teleconferences).
  • Self-study formats (recorded/on-demand courses) from approved providers — Ohio permanently removed its self-study cap from 2023 onward.
  • Teaching or presenting in approved CLE programs — credit for presentation and preparation, with limits (e.g. first time teaching may allow up to 3 hours per credit hour).
  • Publication of legal writings or articles (up to a limit, e.g. 10 credit hours per period).
  • Coursework at ABA-accredited law schools (e.g. semester hour credit conversion).
  • Service such as teaching in judicial education programs (for judges/magistrates).

Limits & special rules

  • “Professional conduct” credits must total 2.5 hours per period, covering ethics, professionalism, substance abuse, client relations, etc.
  • Excess credits beyond 24 can be carried over — up to 12 general CLE hours (professional conduct may not carry over as its own category).
  • For newly admitted attorneys, 12 hours of New Lawyers Training (NLT) must be completed in the first biennial period, including specific hours in professionalism, law office management, and client fund management.
  • CLE credit equals 60 minutes of instruction = 1 credit hour.
  • Repeating the same program in the same period yields limited credit for teaching beyond first presentation.

Key Takeaway: In Ohio, approved live or interactive programs, self-study, teaching, publications, and law school courses count toward the 24-hour biennial CLE requirement — but you must include 2.5 hours of professional conduct, and abide by rules on carryover and special training for new attorneys.
