What happens if I miss the CLE deadline in Iowa?

Failing to meet Iowa’s CLE deadline can lead to late fees, a notice of delinquency, and suspension if not cured after notice. Iowa attorneys must complete 15 CLE credits (including 1 ethics and 1 wellness or diversity/inclusion) by December 31 and report by March 10.

Deadlines & Reporting Requirements

  • December 31: Last day to complete all required credits.
  • March 10: Deadline to file your annual CLE report.

Noncompliance Procedures & Penalties (Rule 41 / Chapter 41)

  • The Iowa Supreme Court’s CLE Commission may issue a notice of delinquency for missing timely compliance.
  • You then typically have 15 days to file an affidavit showing the noncompliance was not willful.
  • If you do not cure the deficiency or justify the failure, the court may suspend your license until compliance is achieved.

Key Takeaway: In Iowa, missing the December 31 credit deadline or March 10 reporting deadline can result in a notice of delinquency and possible suspension unless you cure the deficiency or establish excusable cause promptly.
