What is the grace period for CLE reporting in Maine?

Maine provides an automatic grace period through the end of the last business day in February (following the December 31 deadline) to cure CLE deficiencies. During that time, attorneys may complete missing credits and have them counted toward the prior reporting year.

Maine CLE Limits & Timing

  • December 31: Deadline to complete required annual CLE credits.
  • Last business day in February: Last day to certify or cure deficiencies under the grace period.

If You Remain Noncompliant

  • Attorneys still deficient as of that February deadline pay a noncompliance fee, as set by the CLE Committee.
  • Continued noncompliance may lead to administrative suspension under Maine Bar Rules 4(g) and 4(h).
  • Hours earned during the grace period may carry over: any excess beyond the current requirement can be applied toward the next year.

Key Takeaway: Maine’s grace period runs until the last business day of February, giving attorneys a window past December 31 to catch up — after that, late fees and suspension processes kick in.
