What is the grace period for CLE reporting in Virginia?

Virginia provides a limited “grace” window to report hours — attorneys must complete CLE by October 31 and then report by December 15. Late reporting until February 1 is permitted with additional fees.

Virginia CLE Deadlines & Reporting Window

  • October 31: Deadline to fulfill the 12-hour MCLE requirement.
  • December 15 (by 4:45 p.m. EST): Deadline to file the MCLE Form 1 report. Late filing incurs a $100 fee.
  • February 1: Final late reporting date with an additional $100 late filing fee if still delinquent.

Noncompliance & Suspension Risk

  • A 60-day notice of impending suspension is sent in early January to attorneys still noncompliant.
  • If compliance is not cured by February 1, administrative suspension may follow, plus a reinstatement fee.

Key Takeaway: Virginia’s reporting “grace period” runs through December 15 (with a late-filing extension to February 1) — complete your CLE by October 31, report by December 15, and if needed, use the extended period with fees.
