New Members: Free 1 credit course with code FREECLE

How early can I report CLE credits in Maine?

In Maine, you may begin having CLE credits reported soon after you complete a course (not only at year-end). Under Maine Bar Rule 5, program sponsors must submit attendance rosters no later than 30 days after the program date.

However, attorneys may only certify annual compliance (i.e. report in bulk) after the year ends (December 31); the reporting (filing) window opens in January and runs until the last business day of February.

Key Details

  • Maine’s reporting period is the calendar year (Jan 1 through Dec 31).
  • Attorneys are required to earn 12 CLE credits per year, including 1 hour of ethics and 1 hour in harassment/discrimination training.
  • Sponsors must submit attendance rosters within 30 days after the program date.
  • If the attorney submits self-study or nonaccredited course credits, they must submit their certificate/application no later than 30 days following program completion.
  • The attorney’s annual MCLE Report Statement must be filed by 4:30 PM Eastern on the last business day of February following year-end.

Key Takeaway
In Maine, CLE credits begin being reported within 30 days after the course (by sponsors or attorneys), but the formal reporting (certification of compliance) can only be done after December 31, during the January–February window.
